John Thompson Architects and Chairman for The Academy of Urbanism

John Thompson is Chairman of John Thompson & Partners and an architect with extensive experience of urban regeneration and residential development in both the public and private sectors. In the 1980s he pioneered the introduction in the UK of community planning as a tool for engaging local people in the design of their own neighbourhoods and has subsequently been responsible for a series of seminal projects that have simultaneously delivered physical, social and economic change.

He has undertaken masterplanning and urban design projects in towns and cities throughout Europe, including Belfast, Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham and London, as well as Berlin, Dublin, Prague, Paris, Lubeck and Istanbul, and is currently designing a number of new settlements in England, Scotland, Iceland and the Moscow city region.

John is also Chairman of The Academy of Urbanism which was created in 2006 to identify and promote best practice in urbanism throughout Great Britain and Ireland. Through the Urbanism Awards, the Academy is creating a body of evidence-based best practice at the level of city, town, neighbourhood, street and place, and, through UniverCities, it is seeking to create a network of urban laboratories that will share a commitment to partnership and knowledge transfer across all sectors and disciplines.
