Abstract:
The Quaggy river flood alleviation scheme is a £18million project completed in 2007 constructed to protect over 600 properties in the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham. The client was the Environment Agency. Adopting the best practice policies of “Making Space for Water” Defra 2004, it demonstrates the way in which natural processes and restoration of the river in an environment can be undertaken to realise sustainable solutions for modern urban regeneration. The project has won over six awards for excellence in design and landscape, including the prestigious BURA Renaissance award for environment in 2006 and green apple and CABE awards for sustainable design.
Roland will also pick up the use of natural landscape in large scale projects including the Humber and the managed retreat site at Alkborough, this is the largest project of its kind in Europe. He will touch upon the Thames Estuary 2100 and the Thames Barrier 100 year life project. Roland will also touch upon wider projects such as the Mekong Delta (Vietnam) and Rio Salado (Argentina), projects completely different in scale to those in the UK.
