Abstract

How will we secure the future of our power requirements?

In 2006, The UK Government’s Foresight Programme in the Government Office for Science was asked to explore how the UK built environment could evolve to help manage the transition, over the next five decades, to secure sustainable, low-carbon energy systems that meet the needs of society, the requirements of the economy, and the expectations of individuals. The result is “Powering our Lives: Sustainable Energy Management and the Built Environment’, which was published on the same day in November 2008 that the Climate Change Act passed into law, and is the culmination of two years of work, involving over 200 experts, analysis of the evidence base through 60 peer-reviewed state-of-science papers , and the use of a variety of futures techniques. The presentation discusses some key insights of the SEMBE report.
