Visualisations of the 21st Century City 2008.

Designing for the future.

Over the next twenty years it is likely that many towns and cities will undergo considerable change, as will the technologies, social climates and environmental conditions that influence their forms. This project aims to create visual representations of this dialogue between the existing built environment and emerging pressures, and how this will effect and develop our surroundings within a twenty year time frame.

We are now in the third year of the Visualisations project, and we are delighted to welcome student representatives from five different design disciplines from within the Royal College of Art which include: architecture, product design, vehicle design, interaction and industrial design to partake in the programme.

The students together with the Building Futures team will discuss study and visualise the scenarios and changes that a particular site in London might experience within twenty years. The results will be collated and presented as an exhibition at the RIBA’s London headquarters in Spring 2008. We also plan to produce a document that will record the process along with the theories and interviews that support the exhibition. This will not only provide a lasting record of the project but also a platform from which we can go on to build those ideas and expand the discussion.

The visualisation project is not only a way for young designers to learn about the importance of future planning in design but also provides them with the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from a multi-disciplinary team representing the built environment professions. Together with the publication, the exhibition will act as a showcase of scenarios for the built environment of the future and how, through good design and planning, we are able to prepare for and adapt to these scenarios
